Drug Induced Dreams

about

BATTLELINES is a social group for South Essex musicians, music lovers, poets, creative thinkers and people who drink beer
The group meets the last Tuesday of each month at Peggy Sues Music Bar.
Prior to each group meet at least three musicians are selected to battle.
The battle is over a set of originally penned lyrics (complete, partial or maybe even just a topic/theme) that can come from anyone in the group (but obviously not the musicians battling).
The musicians get the lyrics at least 2-4 weeks in advance and are challenged to create their own interpretation and bring their version of the song to the battle.
On the night the three musicians will do battle over the lyrics, guitars in hand! The rest of the group deciding the overall victor.

For my first round of Battlelines, I was given the line 'drug induced dreams' to work with, so I wrote this song, and went on to win the round!
I've started writing more songs about other people instead of myself, which is what I did with this song, and I'm rather happy with it :)

lyrics

Dancing in the dark
his limbs are almost lyrical
describe his pain in words
there aren’t enough syllables
but legs and arms
trigger emergency alarms
and from the nurses station they come running quick.
And voices warned
wearing uniforms
I’m sorry son that we’ve had to do this

But like a flame you’ll burn, eventually burn out
and we won’t always be here when you’re down
and like a child your vulnerability it seems
to wrap around your mother’s arms and begs her not to leave
a sharp scratch
and then drug induced dreams.

And when the paper’s went to sign
you cursed the world and blamed the hatred in their eyes of all of your family
but the final straw was standing on that balcony
'cause you were scared.

But like a flame you’ll burn, eventually burn out
and we won’t always be here when you’re down.
and like a child your vulnerability it seems
to wrap around your mother’s arms and begs her not to leave
a sharp scratch
and then drug induced dreams.

And I’ve lost my hope and my faith
and I lost all my will
when I saw in your face
the tears that don’t fall
and don’t form anymore
the effort in caring
you put in before
the lines on your face
where we weathered the storm
and we prayed
that life wouldn’t get in our way

But like a flame I burned, and I've burnt out
'cause you were never there when I was down.
And as a child my vulnerability it seemed, to wrap around a strangers arms and beg them not to leave.
And beg them please.
